Riata Ranch Wedding in Santa Margarita, California
Riata Ranch Wedding in Santa Margarita, California
If you’re planning a Riata Ranch wedding, you’re probably looking for something that feels a little different. Not a ballroom. Not a cookie-cutter venue. Something with character, space, and a setting that actually feels like an experience.
Riata Ranch is exactly that. It’s a working ranch tucked into the hills of Santa Margarita, surrounded by oak trees, open land, and that classic Central Coast golden light. It feels private, a little rugged, and completely customizable depending on how you want your day to look.
One of my favorite weddings at this venue leaned into all of that. Outdoor ceremony, relaxed pacing, and a ton of fun. This guide is meant to give you everything you need to know if you’re considering getting married at Riata Ranch.
About Riata Ranch
Riata Ranch is a private ranch and event space that doubles as a vacation retreat. That alone sets it apart. You’re not stepping into a venue that hosts weddings every single day. You’re stepping into a property that feels lived in and personal.
The ranch spans a large area with multiple event zones, including open lawns, a greenhouse space, and the Ranch House itself. Everything is surrounded by natural landscape rather than built structures, which gives you a lot of creative freedom.
Tours are by appointment only since it’s an active property with guests staying onsite. This actually makes the experience better because you get a full walkthrough with someone who knows the space instead of a quick in-and-out visit.
If you’re comparing this to more built-out venues, you might want to check out my Estate Yountville wedding blog. That one leans refined and structured, while Riata Ranch is more open and customizable.
Ceremony and Reception Layout Options
One of the biggest advantages of Riata Ranch is how flexible the layout is.
Most couples host their ceremony outdoors, often beneath oak trees or in open fields that overlook the surrounding hills. There’s no single “standard” ceremony site, which means you can position everything based on light, views, and guest flow.
Reception setups are just as flexible. You can bring in long farm tables, create a tented reception, or design a fully open-air dinner under string lights. The greenhouse space is also a unique option for smaller or more styled gatherings.
This is not a venue where you’re fitting into a pre-designed template. You’re building your own layout from the ground up, which is a huge advantage if you want your wedding to feel different.
What’s Included (and What’s Not)
Riata Ranch provides foundational items like tables and basic event equipment, but it is not an all-inclusive venue.
You’ll need to bring in most of your vendor team, including catering, rentals, coordination, and bar service. That said, the venue offers guidance and a preferred vendor list to help you get started.
One key requirement is that weddings with 50 or more guests must have a professional planner. That’s important here because of how customizable the space is. A planner will help keep everything running smoothly when there are more moving pieces.
The upside is full creative control. The tradeoff is that you need a strong team to execute it.
Pricing and Packages
Riata Ranch offers different wedding packages depending on how much of the property you want to use.
There are options for renting individual event spaces as well as full-property experiences that include the Ranch House for a multi-day stay. Many couples choose weekend packages so they can host welcome events, the wedding itself, and a post-wedding brunch all in one place.
There are also options to extend your stay beyond the standard three-night package at a reduced nightly rate.
Because this is a private venue with a lot of flexibility, pricing can vary based on guest count, duration, and which spaces you use. Expect to invest more than a simple venue rental, but less than a fully all-inclusive luxury resort.

Guest Experience and Capacity
Riata Ranch works well for both mid-size and larger weddings, but there are a few key capacity details to keep in mind.
Restroom facilities are included for up to 100 guests. If your guest count exceeds that, you’ll need to rent additional restroom trailers.
Security is included for up to 150 guests, with additional staff required for larger events.
The Ranch House can accommodate a limited number of overnight guests, which is ideal for immediate family or your wedding party. Most other guests will stay in nearby areas like San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, or surrounding vacation rentals.
This setup naturally creates a more intimate atmosphere, even for larger weddings.
Alcohol, Catering, and Event Flow
Riata Ranch is a bring-your-own-alcohol venue, which gives you flexibility and can significantly reduce costs.
You can supply your own beer, wine, and liquor, but it must be served by a licensed bartender or caterer.
Catering is fully customizable. You can bring in your own caterer or choose from preferred vendors. This is where couples can really personalize their wedding, whether that means formal plated dinners or more relaxed family-style meals.
Timing is important here. Amplified music must end by 10:00 pm, and guests should be off the property by 10:30 pm. That means your timeline should be built intentionally to make the most of the evening.
Logistics, Insurance, and Setup
There are a few logistical details that are important to understand before booking.
You’ll need to purchase event insurance with at least $1,000,000 in coverage and include host liquor liability if alcohol is served.
All vendors must also carry liability insurance and provide documentation before the event.
Setup and breakdown are handled by your planner, caterer, or rental team. The venue provides equipment but does not handle setup.
You’ll also need to remove all decor, rentals, and personal items the night of the event unless otherwise arranged. Nothing can remain on the lawn overnight.
These are the kinds of details that matter when planning a wedding here, and having a strong coordinator makes a huge difference.
Planning Tips for a Riata Ranch Wedding
The biggest thing to understand about Riata Ranch is that it rewards intentional planning.
You’re not stepping into a fully managed environment. You’re creating your own.
That means thinking through things like:
How guests move from ceremony to reception
Where lighting is needed after sunset
How vendors access the property
Where key moments will happen
The Central Coast climate is generally warm and dry, especially in spring and summer. Evenings cool down, so having layers or heaters available is a good idea.
Wind can also be a factor, so keep that in mind for florals, signage, and ceremony setup.
If you’re the type of couple who wants control and a setting that feels personal, this venue gives you that in a big way.
Videography and Storytelling at Riata Ranch
Riata Ranch has a natural cinematic quality to it. The openness of the land, the way light moves across the hills, and the lack of visual clutter all make it ideal for storytelling.
The wedding I filmed here worked so well because it didn’t try to force anything. It let the space do its thing.
From a filmmaking perspective, I focus on capturing the flow of the day. The quiet moments before the ceremony. The way people gather. The shift into celebration as the sun drops.
